Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplant
Introduction: -
Department of Surgical Gastroenterology was established from the very functioning of IGIMS in 1985. This department was third in the country and first in Northeastern India to establish as a Super Specialty Department.
The Founder faculty was Late Dr. Sureshwer Sati Prasad along with Senior Resident Dr. C. Khandawal who later becomes the second Faculty and second Head of Department in its history. Other Faculties who joined were Dr. K. N. Sinha , Dr. Vijay Mittal , Dr. Sanjeev Shriastav , Dr. Sunil Singh and Late Dr. G.S. Choudhary . All of these Faculties either retired or left the department by2007.
All major Special Surgical Operations like Oesophageal, Gastric, Small & Large Bowel, Anorectal and Hepatbiliary Surgeries were done in this Department since its inception in 1985. Patient was referred from all medical college and private Hospital of Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam and Nepal to this Department.
Laparoscopic Surgery was stared in this Department in 1995 by Dr. Vijay Mittal. M.Ch in G.I.Surgery was started in this Department in 1996 and two candidates were enrolled as Dr. Shiv Narayan Singh and Dr. Rajiv Mishra in which Dr. Shiv Narayan Singh completed the recognized by MCI.
The second new era of the Department started with Dr. Manish Mandal who become Assistant Professor in September 2006. He became clinical Head of Department in2007 after retirement of Dr. S.S. Prasad. He restarted the Laparoscopic Service in 2007 which had closed in 2005. He was later promoted to Associate Professor and Head in 2010, Additional Professor in 2013 and Professor in 2017.
In this second Era of Department, Dr. Manish Mandal made efforts to get filled the vacant Faculty Posts. He was joined by dynamic young Faculties like Dr. Utpal Anand (2010) Dr. Sanjay Kumar (2014), Dr. Saket Kumar (2019) Dr. Amarjit Kr. Raj (2016), Dr. Rakesh Kumar Singh (2016).
Since its inception till now about 35 senior Resident s Joined this Department , completed their tenure and later become known gastro surgeons in Bihar and adjoining states and are doing excellent work in Open and Laparoscopic Surgery .
G.I. Surgery Department is recognized throughout India in its Patient care, teaching and training programs and also in research work. About more than 100 papers have been published by the department in many regional, National and International Journals.
Because of high incidence of Gall Stones and Gall Bladder Cancer cases in Bladder Cancer Experience in north Eastern India . It’s also known for managing all types of Advance Laparoscopic Procedures.
The Department of organized National Conference of India Association of Surgical Gastroenterology in 2000 and has been the host for Conference /CME/Workshop at state at regular intervals since 1985 till now. The Department has organized twice FMAS Fellowship Course and FIAGES course in recent years.
Presently under able Leadership of Dr. Manish Mandal this Department has got permission to start M.Ch Course (3 Seats) in 2018. Department also plans to start three years Fellowship Course in Liver Transplant and Observer-ship Course in Minimal Access Surgery .
Under dynamic guidance of Dr. N.R. Biswash ,Director, IGIMS, , the department has had MOU with ILBS, New Delhi in 2017 to start Liver Transplant programmer here . After which the Liver Transplant team of Doctors, Para Medical Staff and Nurses of IGIMS had formal Training at ILBS, New Delhi. Now, the IGIMS Liver Transplant Team is all set to start Living Donor Liver Transplant early next year. Once started, it will be a big achievement not only for Department or IGIMS but also for Bihar.
